Setting up
Jukebox looks for a folder named music at the root of a USB drive, and scans it and every folder inside it.
- On a computer, open the USB drive.
- Create a folder named
music(all lowercase) at the drive's root, not inside another folder. - Copy your music into it. Folders inside are scanned, so an
Artist/Album/tracklayout works great. - Eject the drive, plug it into the cabinet, start Jukebox and open My Music.

Any layout works: one big folder of songs, folders by album only, or Artist/Album. Tidy tags matter more than tidy folders (see below).
Over Wi-Fi
No need to take the drive out: send music and videos from any computer or phone on the same network as the cabinet.
- In My Music, choose Add music and videos over Wi-Fi (or press Start on the "No music found" screen). The cabinet shows an address like
http://192.168.1.20:8080and a 4-digit PIN. - Open that address in a browser and enter the PIN.
- Drop songs, videos or whole artist and album folders on the page, or use Choose a folder / Choose files.
- Press Back on the cabinet when you're done. The library rescans and the new music shows up.
- Folders are kept, up to three levels (
Artist/Album/Disc 1), inside the drive'smusicfolder. Send whole album folders to keep albums together. - Cover images (
.jpg,.png) come along with the songs. Other files are skipped. - Videos (
.mp4,.m4v,.mkv,.mov,.webm,.avi) go to the drive'svideosfolder instead, folders kept, and show up under Videos on the main menu. - Files already on the drive are skipped.
- It only runs while that screen is open, with a new PIN each time. Use the port the cabinet shows (8080 is sometimes taken).
- The music keeps playing while you send.
File types
| Format | Plays | Names from tags | Embedded art |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Yes | Yes (ID3v2) | Yes |
| FLAC | Yes | Yes (Vorbis comments) | Yes |
| M4A / AAC | Yes | Yes (M4A) | Yes (M4A) |
| OGG, Opus, WAV, WMA | Yes | No, from folders | No: use a cover.jpg |
Names & tags
For MP3, FLAC and M4A, Jukebox reads the title, artist, album and track number from the file's tags, the same ones a music player or iTunes shows. An M4A with no artist uses its album artist.
For other files, or files with no tags, it uses the folders: the file's folder becomes the album and the folder above it the artist, and the file name becomes the title. Anything it can't place goes under Unknown Album / Unknown Artist.
- Albums are grouped by name and folder, so two different albums with the same name (say, two Greatest Hits) stay separate.
- An album split into
CD1/CD2orDisc 1/Disc 2folders stays one album. - An album with several artists (a compilation or soundtrack) shows as Various Artists, and each artist on it still appears under Artists.
- Tracks play in track-number order when the tags have them. Starting file names with the number (
01 One More Time.mp3) helps files without tags.
Album art
The cover shows on Now Playing, which also takes on the album's colors, and big on the backglass. Jukebox takes the first of these it finds:
- an image in the album's folder named
cover,folderorfront(.jpg,.jpegor.png, any capitalization); - Windows Media Player's
AlbumArt…Large.jpg; - any other image in the folder;
- a picture inside an MP3, FLAC or M4A file. When a file has several, the front cover wins;
- the album's cover from Apple's iTunes Search, looked up online by artist and album. It's used only when the album name matches exactly, and kept in
external/jukebox-app/data/covers/, never in your music folders.
No art at all? A spinning record shows instead.
Tip: got the wrong cover, or an album too rare for the lookup? Save the right one as cover.jpg in the album's folder: a folder image always wins. To turn the online lookup off, add covers = 0 to jukebox.cfg at the root of the USB drive.
Browsing
My Music opens to five rows:
| Row | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Albums | Every album with its artist and track count. Open one to see its tracks. |
| Artists | Everyone in your library, including artists who only appear on a compilation. Pick one to see all of their songs from every album. |
| All Tracks | Every song in the library. |
| Shuffle | Turns shuffle on or off (it shows ON / OFF). |
| Add music and videos over Wi-Fi | Send music and videos from a browser (see above). |
Play a track and the rest of that list follows: ←/→ on Now Playing step through it, and the next track starts on its own when one ends. The music keeps playing while you browse; the mini player at the bottom of each list shows what's on.
| Button | In My Music |
|---|---|
| Arrows | Select |
| Start | Open a list, play a track, or toggle Shuffle |
| Back | Up a level (to the menu from the top) |
Shuffle
Turn it on from the Shuffle row, or press a Flipper on Now Playing while your music is playing. It's a mode: once it's on, whatever you play (an album, an artist or All Tracks) plays in random order until you turn it off. Now Playing shows a SHUFFLE tag while it's on.
Troubleshooting
"No music found"
- The folder must be named exactly
music, all lowercase. - It must sit at the root of the drive, not inside
externalor another folder. - It must hold files of a type in the table above.
"Scanning library…" for a while
A large library takes a moment the first time My Music opens, while the tags are read.
Songs under Unknown Album or Unknown Artist
Those files have no tags Jukebox can read and sit too high up for the folders to say. Add tags with a music app, or move them into an Artist/Album folder.
One album shows up twice
Its tracks are in two different folders, or the album name in their tags differs slightly. Put them in one folder (or CD1 / CD2 folders inside it) and make the album tags match.
No album art
Put a cover.jpg in the album's folder. See Album art.
